The Sherlock Holmes Detector

The Sherlock Holmes Detector is a portable desktop diamond verification instrument for loose and mounted stones designed to separate diamonds from synthetic diamonds. The Sherlock Holmes Detector is manually operated and requires an operator to interpret the test results.

Instrument Performance
The below results demonstrate the performance of the Sherlock Holmes Diamond Detector with the ASSURE Core Sample:

Diamond False Positive Rate (optimal rate 0%): 0%
Diamond Referral Rate (optimal rate 0%): N/A
Diamond Accuracy Rate (optimal rate 100%): 97.5%
Speed (stones tested per hour): 530

The ASSURE Core Sample consists of 1,000 loose diamonds, 200 loose synthetic diamonds and 200 loose diamond simulants. The stones are 0.02ct to 0.20ct in D-J colour.

The below results demonstrate the performance of the Sherlock Holmes Diamond Detector with the ASSURE Smalls Sample:

Diamond False Positive Rate (optimal rate 0%): 0%
Diamond Referral Rate (optimal rate 0%): N/A
Diamond Accuracy Rate (optimal rate 100%): 97.8%
Speed (stones tested per hour): 530

The ASSURE Smalls Sample consists of 1,000 loose diamonds, 200 loose synthetic diamonds and 200 loose diamond simulants. The stones are 0.005 ct to 0.02 ct in D-J colour.

Instrument Capabilities
Automated Feed: No
Automated Results: No
Automated Dispense: No
Detect or Refer (Synthetic Diamonds): Detect
Multiple Stones at Once: Yes
Training Required: No, review user manual

The Sherlock Holmes Detector captures an image and based on visual analysis of the images, and support from a decision tool, the operator can conclude one of the following results:

  1. Diamond
  2. Synthetic diamond
  3. Refer

The ‘Refer’ result could contain potential synthetic diamonds and diamonds. Yehuda recommends further testing with regular UV light or by a gemmological laboratory.

Overview

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

The stated instrument was evaluated to Diamond Verification Instrument Standard Part 1 – Diamond

Verification Instrument for Screening Diamonds from Synthetic Diamonds (30 January 2019) as referenced

by the Diamond Verification Instrument Standard – General Requirements for Evaluation Diamond

Verification Instruments (30 January 2019).

Summary of Assessment

The instrument has been verified to be able to screen loose and mounted, round brilliant cut diamonds and

synthetic diamonds in the size range of 0.86 to 3.7 mm (0.003 to 0.2 ct.) and D to J color range.
